Other Information:William had previously served in the medical branch of the militia from 7th March 1900 to 9th January 1903. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 18th April 1904. He was 21 years and 3 months old, and was a Clerk by trade. He entered the war in France on 14th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 3rd Bn. Worcestershire Regiment. His name appears on a list of R.A.M.C. personnel who were taken captive up to & including 31st December 1914. His address was given as 16 Mellias Road, Itonen, Southampton - (kindly provided by Steve Mattocks). William was taken captive on 24th August 1914 at Les Roy, Athenee (Mons). He was taken to the German prisoner of war camp Torgau on 9th September 1914, then to Burg on 26th November and onto Magdeburg on 6th December 1914. He was repatriated back to the U.K. around 1st July 1915. On 21st July 1915 he embarked to serve with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, disembarking in Egypt on 4th August 1915. On 21st October he joined the team of the Director of Medical Services, Base Mudros from Base Details. He was admitted into hospital on 1st November 1915 though, and invalided back to England on the hospital ship "Aquitania". After a bout of hospital treatment he served in the U.K., until he was discharged on 7th June 1917 due to the termination of his period of engagement. He was the husband of Bertha Russell of Hound Road, Netley.
