Other Information:Edward enlisted on 17th August 1915, he was 21 years and 2 months old. He joined at Cape Town. He entered the war on 17th August 1915 on board H.M.H.S. "Ebani" On 11th March 1916, he joined the East African Force from Egypt and saw active service with them from 29th August 1916. He was appointed acting Corporal without pay on 17th June 1917, and then from 1st February 1918 was appointed acting Lance Corporal with pay. He went to Simonstown on 13th September 1918, and re-joined the Hospital Ship "Ebani on the 6th October. An inquest was held into his death - "A verdict of "accidental death" was held at a Popular inquest on Edward Edwin Williams, 24, a Lance-Corporal in the R.A.M.C., who was killed through falling down a hold on the Hospital Ship Elbani, which was in dock for repairs. The hatchway, it was stated, had been negligently left open by workmen." Edward was the son of Henry and Annie Williams of Hermanus, Cape Province, S. Africa.
