John enlisted on 20th September 1915. He was 37 years and 9 months old, a Labourer by trade and living at 22 Buck Grove, Crewe at the time. He was posted to "G" Coy", then embarked at Southampton on 31st December, disembarking in Rouen the next day, he entered the war in France on 1st January 1916. On the 5th January, John was posted to serve with the 13th Field Ambulance in the field and served with them until 4th April, when he was admitted into the 14th Field Ambulance suffering with Synovitis knee. John was transferred through several medical units until he reached Rouen and was admitted into a Convalescent Depot on the 29th. However, on the 5th June, John was admitted into hospital again suffering from Myalgia and was transferred back to the UK, arriving on the 11th. John was in Carisbrooke from 20th July 1916 - 22nd January 1917 and then in a UK Rest Camp until 3rd April. He was posted to serve on H.M.H.S. "Salta" on 4th April 1917 until drowned when it struck a mine and sank half a mile north of the Whistle Bouy, Havre, on 10th April 1917. He was the husband of Elizabeth Snelson of 108 Remer St., Crewe. [Information source: Service record]
