Other Information:John was educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity College. He was a student at St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1888, and graduated M.A., M.B., B.C. (Cantab) in 1892, and M.D.(Cantab) in 1901. He subsequently served as a house-surgeon to the Huddersfield Infirmary, and had held an appointment at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital. He practiced chiefly abroad in connection with the C.M.S. in Palestine, Persia and Africa. After retiring to Chepstow he became the honorary secretary and assistant county director to the Monmouth Red Cross Society. He joined the R.A.M.C. in November 1915, with the rank of temporary Lieutenant, and later attained the rank of temporary Captain. John was reported "Missing, believed drowned" in the Lancet on the 16th December 1916. He was on the hospital ship 'Britannic' when she struck a mine, laid by the U-73, in the Zea Channel, in the Aegean Sea. John was the son of Edward and Theodosia Cropper of Fearnhead, Great Crosby, and the husband of Anne E Cropper of Mount Ballan, Chepstow, Mon. [Portrait photograph kindly provided by Simon Mills]
