Jim enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 22nd November 1916, he was 27 years old. He was the only son of James and Floretta Gambles of 257 Arundel Street, Sheffield; and the husband of Elizabeth Taylor (formerly Gambles) of 49 Fitzgerald Road, Crookes, Sheffield.
