William was educated at Church Bank, Church of England School, near Wallsend, then became a Storekeeper’s apprentice by trade. He joined the R.A.M.C. on 28th October 1915, and was posted to serve on H.M. Hospital Ship “Aberdonian”. He died in hospital at Southampton from exposure and cold when the ship struck a mine. Lt. S F Cheeseman wrote: “He was liked by all. He was one of the orderlies in my ward, and I am glad to tell you that he was always most willing and a good worker, kind and attentive to patients.” [Information source: de Ruvigny's Roll of Honour] William was the son of John and Annie (daughter of Ralph Codling) Mowatt of 57 Grove Road, Rock Ferry, Cheshire.
