Other Information:Samuel had previously served in the Militia with the 4th Bn. Derbyshire Regiment. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 16th August 1901, being 18 years and 3 months old and a Groom by trade. He served in the South African War in 1902, receiving the Queen’s South Africa Medal with Clasps. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 1st June 1905, then gained promotion to Corporal on 1st January 1906. Having re-engaged for service on 25th April 1908, he was then was appointed Lance Serjeant on 1st January 1909, gaining promotion to the rank of Serjeant on 7th January 1909. He re-engaged again for service on 15th February 1911. On 10th August 1914 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant, then 5 days later, entered the war in France on the 15th August 1914. On 1st March 1915 he was promoted to Quartermaster Serjeant; on 4th July 1917 he was appointed acting Staff Serjeant; and on 16th March 1918 he was appointed temporary Serjeant Major. He was discharged after 18 years service on 31st July 1918 to H M Commissions as Lieutenant and Quartermaster Serjeant. He then joined the 141st Field Ambulance for duty on 7th August 1918. He proceeded to the Concentration Camp for dispersal on 6th May 1919, and was struck off the strength of the unit.
