Other Information:John enlisted on 4th December 1915. He was aged 21 years and 3 months and a Plumber by trade. He was put on the army reserve, then mobilized on 24th January 1916 and joined ‘Y’ Coy of the RAMC at Aldershot on the following day. On 22nd August 1916 he was transferred to No 14 Coy, and then transferred again to No. 12 Mesopotamia Reinforcements on 23rd December 1916. He sailed for Mesopotamia from Devenport on 5th January 1917 and disembarked at Basra on 21st March 1917. On 21st April 1917 he ‘joined for duty’ the 1st Base General Hospital at Amara. On 8th August 1917 he was admitted to the same hospital and diagnosed with chronic nephritis and on 23rd August 1917 was invalided on the H. M. Hospital Ship ‘Syria’ to India where he was admitted into the Gerard Freeman-Thomas War Hospital, Bombay. There on 21st September 1917 he was deemed to be unfit for further war service and the decision was taken for him to be repatriated back to the UK. On 25th September he was embarked on H. M. Hospital Ship ‘Delta’ to South Africa where on 12th October 1917 he was admitted to No 2 General Hospital South Africa (Cape Town?). On 24th October he was embarked on H.M.N.Z. Hospital ship ‘Marama’ for the journey back to the UK, where on 12 November 1917 he was admitted to the 2nd Southern General Hospital in Bristol. From there he was transferred to a hospital in Cheltenham on 12th December 1917 and then on to Bradford War Hospital on 1st July 1918. He was discharged from the army on 10th August 1918 and finally released from hospital on 23rd September 1918. John was the son of Charles and Sarah Dean of Horsefair, Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire.
