Ernest was employed at the Crown Bottle Works, Jack Lane, Hunslet, when war broke out. He arrived in a Threatre of war on the 1st May 1915. Ernest was mentioned in the Yorkshire Evening News on the 29th November 1917, which reads "Private Ernest Haynes, of the RAMC, whose wife and child reside at 52 Turkey Street, Hunslet, Leeds has been awarded the Military Medal for bringing in wounded under heavy shell fire.
