Other Information:Samuel was a coal miner, who lived at 46 Upper Church Street, Mount Pleasant, Low Spennymoor with his wife Anastasia Agnes and children; Anastasia Agnes, Samuel, and Margaret Jane. He entered the war in France on the 27th September 1915. Samuel was awarded the awarded the Military Medal in 1916 for conspicuous bravery on 21 – 22nd May in tending and bringing in a wounded officer from the line to the dressing room, a distance of six miles under heavy shell fire, when the Germans broke through and took 1500 yards of trenches. He went with his men the next day retaking the trenches, and although suffering from the effects of gas continued to do his duty in bringing in the wounded. At Spennymoor Town Hall on Thursday 13th March 1919 a presentation of medals and gifts to Spennymoor heroes took place. The presentation, made by Mr Wm Fleming, was preceded by music from the Sons of Temperance Prize Band, and songs. There were 18 recipients, the RAMC men to be awarded were; Cpl S. Bott RAMC Military Medal. Pte T. Phoenix RAMC Military Medal, and Sgt G. Galley RAMC Certificate of Merit. The gifts appeared to be gold guard and gold necklett.
