Horace enlisted on 21st June 1915. He was 37 years old, a college servant by trade, and was living at 24 Milton Road, Archway Road, Highgate, London at the time. He served in the RAMC as an orderly. Horace was admitted to the hospital with influenza and pneumonia. He was the son of Edward and Maria Dines and the husband of Elizabeth Harriet Dines.
