Other Information:Clifford enrolled in the 3rd West Lancashire Field Ambulance in Kendal, Westmorland on the 31st March 1913. He spent 1914 through to December 1915 in the UK at St Helens, Knowsley, Tunbridge Wells, Sittingbourne (where he met his wife), Canterbury and Larkhill. He was promoted to Serjeant 5th August 1914. He entered the war in France on the 15th January 1916. Due to the result of a kick when Clifford was 15 and necrosis attacking his left tibia, he was admitted into his own Field Ambulance on the 18th March 1917, where he stayed until the 22nd when he was sent to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station, and then onto No 32 Stationary Hospital. On the 28th March Clifford was evacuated to the UK on the Hospital Ship 'Cambria'. On the 13th November 1917 Clifford was posted to Salonika, and on the 9th March 1918 went to serve with No 28 General Hospital. On the 2 August 1918 he was posted ‘on one month’s probation’ to 18 Heavy Battery RGA, returning to 28 General Hospital on 14 September. In January 1919 he was promoted Acting QM Sergeant with the 28 General Hospital. He returned to UK on Long Service on the 10th March 1919 and was disembodied on the 21 April from the 28 General Hospital with the rank of S/Sjt. He served 1 year 74 days in France, 1 year 11 days in Salonika. [Information and photograph kindly provided by family]
