Other Information:Duncan enlisted, and was embodied into the 3/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance, on 6th August 1915. He was 23 years and 3 months old; was a Chemist/Dispenser by trade; and was living at 226 Crown Road, Glasgow at the time. He embarked at Southampton on 10th May 1916, then disembarking at Alexandria on 21st entered the war in Egypt. He joined the 1/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance on 30th and was taken on strength. On 10th April 1918, he embarked on H.M.S. ‘Caledonia’ with the unit and headed for France, disembarking at Marseilles on 17th. *About 4.00 a.m. on 27th May 1918 the enemy started to shell St Eloi, with the first shell landing on one of the huts occupied by the personnel of this unit. This incident resulted in 10 O/Rs being slightly wounded, 6 O/Rs being severely wounded, 10 O/Rs were instantaneously killed, and 5 O/Rs died from wounds. (*Taken from Unit war diary, kindly provided by Sam Biles) Duncan was one of the 5 who died from wounds - receiving a gun shot wound to his back, he died No 42 Casualty Clearing Station. He was the son of John and Margaret Caulfield of 2 George Place, Gourock, Renfrewshire. The epitaph on his headstone reads "Eternal rest give unto him O Lord, Our lady of Lourdes pray for him"
