John enlisted on 14th May 1915, then entered the war in France on 11th August 1915. On 1st March 1917 he suffered a "GSW" to his neck, although the wound was slight. On 25th August 1917 he accompanied the unit to attend the Divisional Ceremonial Parade for presentation of Medal Ribbons by the Army Commander. He was presented with a ribbon of his Bar to the M.M. On 24th September 1918 he suffered a "GSW" (shell) to his head, neck, back & legs, and was evacuated to a Casualty Clearing Station. He was discharged from the army due to his wounds on 7th April 1919.
