Samuel lived in Warwick. He entered the war in France on 20th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column. He was serving with the 142nd Field Ambulance when he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For distinguished and long-continued good service. he has served with the BEF since August 1914. He has at all times carried out his duties with distinction and untiring energy. During the last six months he has been senior NCO in charge of bearers, and, as such, has set a splendid example to his men through his coolness and initiative when under fire. On various occasions he has shown a very high standard of efficiency in organising the work of advanced dressing-stations and collecting posts."
