Charles was educated at South Queensferry Public School, and was an Organist and Choirmaster. He volunteered for service after the outbreak of war, joining the Territorial Force. He left for the Dardanelles on 30th July 1915, and entered the war in Egypt on the 11th August. Charles was the son on Charles (Ex-Provost of South Queensferry, West Lothian) and Jeanie (Daughter of Robert Gibb of Paisley) Stevenson.
