Thomas enlisted into the R.A.M.C. [T.F.] on 25th November 1909 for a period of 4 years. He was 21 years and 2 months old, a grocer's assistant by trade, and living at 4 Granchester Street, Cambridge at the time. He completed his annual training in Colchester during 1910 and 1911, and at Netley in 1912 and 1913, completing his service on 24th November 1913 at the rank of Corporal. Thomas re-enlisted straight away and on 5th August 1914 was mobilized for war service. He served at 'Home' until 14th April 1917, when he joined the British Expeditionary Force in France, he was posted to serve with No 55 General Hospital. On 13th January 1919, Thomas left France for leave in the UK but returned on the 28th. [Possibly to serve with No 8 Stationary Hospital as this unit is mentioned on his Protection Certificate and Certificate of Identity] He finally returned to the UK on 12th May 1919 and was disembodied on 10th June, finally leaving the forces on 31st March 1920.
