Francis entered the war in France on 18th August 1914, as part of the team for the Assistant Director of Medical Services, 5th Division. His name appears on a list of R.A.M.C. personnel who were taken captive up to & including 31st December 1914 - (kindly provided by Steve Mattocks). He was taken to the German prisoner of war camp 'Friedrichsfeld' on 12th November 1914, then transferred to the prisoner of war camp 'Crefeld on 25th June 1915.
