Douglas entered the war in France on 1st May 1915. He, along with 1114 Sjt Frederick Rogers, was mortally wounded when a shell struck a party of volunteers who, carrying dressings and stores in answer to an urgent demand from the Quarry Post near Bazentin, went on foot from Mametz up Happy Valley through a heavy bombardment.
