Frederick lived in Colchester. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for devotion to duty in France. The citation for his Distinguished Conduct Medal reads "For gallantry and devotion to duty, especially when his field ambulance cleared the line during heavy fighting in September and October, 1918. By his inspiring example many wounded were safely removed and their lives saved." He was promoted from acting Serjeant Major to Serjeant Major on 20th July 1918.
