Other Information:Edward was educated at St Williams’ School in Lancaster, then became a Paper Mill Hand by trade. He enlisted on 10th December 1915, but didn’t join the R.A.M.C. until 22nd September 1916. He was 38 years and 9 months old at the time. He was posted to No 8 Coy, then did his training with “T” Coy. On 13th June 1917 he was posted to serve at the war hospital, Huddersfield. On 22nd October 1917, he embarked at Southampton as part of reinforcements, he arrived at Havre the next day but then left on the 25th for Rouen. On 7th November he was posted to No 3 Ambulance Flotilla, then on 22nd was transferred to serve with No 2 Stationary Hospital. On 4th March 1918, Edward was admitted into his unit suffering with acute bronchitis. He never recovered and died at No 2 Stationary Hospital from heart failure. The matron of the hospital wrote to say that he was much liked and would be greatly missed. Edward was the son of William and May Clegg; and the husband of Emma Clegg of 1 Back Astley Street, Darwen, Lancs - married at St John’s Darwen. They had one son.
