Jack Duffett was awarded the Military Medal for devotion to duty in April 1918 - he was badly mustard gassed on 18th April 1918 in the battle of Arras in Villers-Brettoneux. As a stretcher bearer he had to enter cellars full of gas to rescue the wounded. Having recovered he succumbed to 'trench fever'. He was only 16 years and 4 months old when he enlisted in 1915. He survived the war and became a charge nurse at the Maidstone 'asylum' and died in 1973.
