Alfred worked for Dennis Paine and Co as a carpenter. He enlisted with the 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance T.F. on 26th April 1915. He was sent to France on 23rd January 1917 and arrived in Le Havre on the 24th January 1917 and served with the 2/1st Home counties Field Ambulance as a stretcher bearer. On his discharge on 7th June 1919 he was assessed to have suffered from heart problems due to gas poisoning on the 17th April 1918 at Villiers Brettoneux. It stated his condition had gone untreated. In 1918 whilst on leave he married Gertrude Manning in Ipswich.
