Alfred resided at Nursey Cottages Hermitage Lane Maidstone and was a farm labourer. He enlisted with the 1st Home Counties Field Ambulance, T.F. on 13th February 1915. He was sent to France on the 23rd January 1917 and arrived at Le Havre on the 24th January 1917 and was serving with the 2/1st Home Counties Field Ambulance. Whilst on duty he was badly mustard gassed on the 18th April 1918 at Villiers Brettonneux near Amiens whilst rescuing soldiers from cellars. He remained on duty. Sadly whilst surviving the gas attack he did not survive the war as he contracted influenza and had heart failure. He died at No 15 Casualty Clearing Station. He left behind his wife Adelaide and children Elsie, Margaret, William, Jessie, Harold, Ivy, Thomas and Reuben. He is also commemorated at the war memorial at East Farleigh church although sadly he is not remembered on the Barming Parish memorial.
