Additional information for:
Thomas

Submitted by Andrew Winstanley Date Added: Wednesday 28 October, 2020
Thomas was born in 1892 in North Ashton near Wigan. He completed his education by the age of 14 and commenced work at one of the local pits. His father worked there as a "winder" having lost an arm in an accident at work. His younger brother Arthur joined them later.
Thomas entered WW1 on 22 September 1914 at Fazakerly (Liverpool) recruiting office for the RAMC. Later records show him as part of the West Lancs Field Ambulance TF. And there is a reference to RAMC/101 B64. Hs service number was 344054.
Family history records that he was wounded by a shell splinter to the shoulder at Bullecourt, possibly 2 September 2018, when the village was finally recovered from German occupation. Subsequently he was transferred to the 1st Western General hospital. Back at Fazakerly.
He was discharged as "physically unfit for Army service" on 26 November 2018 and was awarded a pension for at least 32 weeks at 13s 9d per week. He returned to North Ashton.
