He studied Medicine at Queen's College Cork, graduating in 1885. His father, James Christopher Marks D.Mus. (born Armagh) was organist and choirmaster of St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork city, Ireland, from 1860 until his death on 17/07/ 1903. George's brothers were also organists: James Christopher Marks (born Cork 1863; died New York 1946; composer and organist at St Andrew's Church, Pittsburgh, USA) and Thomas Osborne Marks D.Mus. (organist, Armagh Cathedral).
