After 10 days in the line supporting the attacks of the 18th Division at Fricourt (1st-10th July 1016, battle of Somme), the 51st Field Ambulance pulled out to run a clearing station 3 miles behind the front. A week later they returned to set up aid posts in the front line trences. This time supporting the attacks on Mametz wood. This is more than likely where A/Sgt Mogan (Morfyn) Griffiths won his MM through his actions over these days. I have found reference to other members of his unit receiving the Military Medal for 'Conspicuous Conduct' within the same period of these three weeks.
